Mar 2009 - Peter Schilling (President of MA-RI Council of TU): The Russell (MA) Biomass Power Plant and its possible effects on adjacent Westfield River.

- Inspired by Todd Richards’ presentation at our January chapter meeting, along with our brethren Southeastern Mass TU’s success with their Red Brook restoration, which now has sea-run brook trout, CMTU is getting involved in stream restoration. One target on our radar screen: the Blackstone River and its tributaries. With help from several other concerned agencies, other MA-RI chapters, and spearheaded by past President Paul Bakstran, CMTU’s stream restoration efforts will begin in spring 2009.

Jan 2009 - Presentation: Todd Richards, Fisheries Biologist with the Mass Division of Fisheries and Wildlife on "Wild Trout Habitat Restoration in Hamant Brook, Sturbridge, MA.

Dec 2008 - Presentation: Dean Clark, a long time conservationist and outdoor educator/volunteer, will present the facts supporting the grass roots movement to have wild striped bass declared and managed as a gamefish. This is definitely a timely and hotly-debated topic.

Nov 2008 - Presentation "Fishing the Big Rivers of New Hampshire" by New Hampshire River Guide Service

Oct 2008 - Randy Julius, fly fisherman, licensed saltwater boat captain, artist and outdoors writer. Randy will present a slide presentation describing ten days of fly-fishing for trout, salmon and pike in the scenic wild places of Alaska.

Sept 2008 - Nationally known fly-fishing writer, editor and publisher Tom Pero speaks about exotic fishing trips and recently published books including Fly Fishing for Striped Bass by Rich Murphy of Georgetown, Massachusetts. Lefty Kreh, the guru of saltwater fly-rodding called it “the best book written on the subject to date.”

Feb 2009 - Another great editorial favoring increased Class 1 (managed for purely wild fish reproduction) and Class 2 (managed for only supplemental stocking and primarily for wild fish reproduction) designations for the Wood River.

Jan 2009 - Great editorial by Burt Strom advocating special regulations favoring "Catch and Release Only" on the Wood River.

Sept 2008 - Summary: Obituary for President Lawson Cary, Updates on Breakheart Brook Restoration, and Fly of the Month "The Buzzer" midge pupa imitation used on the Wood River.

Ames is also author of Hatch Guide for New England Streams. Read about October's meeting featuring a talk by member Dr. Piotr Parasiewicz of the Rushing River Institute, blog.rushingrivers.org about modelling techniques for ecological river management.

Oct 2008 - Guest Speaker: Piotr Parawiceicz “Stream Habitat Assessment Techniques”

Dr. Parasiewicz has developed effective management tools and modelling techniques for ecological river management, and is the developer of MesoHABSIM, a multiscale approach for instream habitat modelling. Additionally, he leads the Northeast Instream Habitat Program at Mt Holyoke College and is the director of the Rushing Rivers Institute, an Amherst based non-profit organization promoting application of cutting edge science in river management. www.RushingRivers.org

Sept 2008 - Summary: National Trout Unlimited welcomes Joe Norton as the Project Coordinator of the Upper Connecticut Home Rivers Initiative. Discussion of reauthorization of the No Child Left Inside Act of 2007 (H.R. 3036 and S. 1981) which seeks to allocate funds towards environmental education for children, environmental teacher training, and ultimately ensuring that every high school graduate is environmentally literate.
